What is a NIE number?

A NIE number is the equivalent of the spanish personal identification number, however for foreigners. NIE stands for Número de Identificación de Extranjeros and directly translated it means, “identification number of foreigners”.

Should I have a NIE number?

You need a NIE number for the most important things, such as the purchase of a house, a car, opening a bank account, mobile phone and alike.

How do I get a NIE number?

The application to get a NIE number takes place at the National Police station (Policia Comisaría) – not the local.  You will need a valid passport and a completed application form, which can be downloaded in advance at this link or you can get the form at the Police station. It is also possible to apply for a NIE number from your home country at the Spanish Embassy. It is helpful to speak some Spanish if you choose to apply on you own. Otherwise MW Services can help you through the process.

What is residencia?

“Residencia” is a permanent residence permit in Spain.

Do I need residencia?

If you intend to stay in Spain for more than 183 days in a calendar year you must apply for “residencia”.

How do I get residencia?

The application to get “residencia” is more or less the same as applying for the NIE number and it also takes place at the National Police station (Policia Comisaría). You will need a valid passport, a passport-size photo and a completed application form, which can be downloaded in advance at the following link or you can get the form at the Police station. In addition, you must be able to demonstrate that you have sufficient financial resources to live in Spain and that you are covered by either a public or private health insurance. Again, some knowledge to Spanish language is helpfull if you choose to apply on you own. Otherwise MW Services can help you through the process.

What if I want to move back home?

If you move back to your home country, you must renounce your “residencia” in Spain. You do this at the same place where you applied for the “residencia”, and it requires a completed application form, which can be downloaded at the following link or it will be handed out at the Police Station.
